Common questions

What is Selfdrop?

A private inbox shared by your own devices. Drop a note, link, file or photo on one, and it's waiting on the others: your phone, laptop, tablet, work computer.

Can Selfdrop read my drops?

No. Everything you drop is encrypted on your device before it's sent, including file names and tags, and only your own devices hold the key. Our servers store unreadable ciphertext.

Do I need an account?

No. As a guest, Selfdrop lives in this browser only. An account lets you log in on a new browser and keeps your devices together, so make one before you rely on it.

How do I add my phone or another computer?

On a device that's already set up, choose Add device to get a code. On the new device, open Selfdrop, choose Join, and type the code. Both screens show a security code: check that they match, then approve.

What is the security code for?

It proves the device asking to join is really yours, so nobody can slip in between. If the codes on the two screens don't match, don't approve.

I logged in on a new browser and it says it's waiting for approval.

Your password brings back your workspaces, but not the key that unlocks them. Approve the new browser from one of your other devices, or unlock it with your recovery key.

What is a recovery key, and do I need one?

It unlocks your drops on a new device when none of your other devices is around. Create it in Settings → Encryption and keep it somewhere safe, like a password manager. We can't recover it for you.

I lost a device. What should I do?

From another device, remove it from your workspace's device list. It loses access straight away and your workspace switches to a new key.

Any tips for iPhone and iPad?

Install it: in Safari tap Share → Add to Home Screen, and always open it from that icon. Safari can clear the data of websites you don't use often, including the key that unlocks your drops. The Download page has the steps for every device.

Is there a size limit?

Each file can be up to 25 MB.
