Get Selfdrop on every device

Selfdrop installs straight from your browser: no app store, nothing to update, and it opens in its own window like any other app.

Install on iPhone & iPad

Use Safari (Chrome and Edge on iOS 16.4 or later work the same way).

  1. 1Open selfdrop.app in Safari.
  2. 2Tap the Share button: the square with an arrow pointing up (bottom of the screen on iPhone, top right on iPad).
  3. 3Scroll down and tap “Add to Home Screen”.
  4. 4If you see “Open as Web App”, leave it on. Tap Add.
  5. 5Open Selfdrop from the new icon on your Home Screen, not from Safari.

Always open it from the Home Screen icon: Safari can clear the data of websites you don't visit often, including the key that unlocks your drops. The installed app keeps it.

Then set it up properly

Four steps, once. After that everything just works across your devices.

  1. 1. Create an account on your first device

Guests live in one browser only. An account lets you log in on your other devices and keeps them together.

    Create an account
  2. 2. Add your other devices

On a device that's set up, choose Add device to get a code. On the new device, open Selfdrop → Join, type the code, check that both screens show the same security code, and approve.

  3. 3. Create a recovery key

Settings → Encryption. Keep it in a password manager: it unlocks your drops if you ever lose all your devices. We can't recover it for you.

    Open settings
  4. 4. Send yourself something

Drop a link or a photo on one device and watch it appear on the others.

Questions

Is it a real app?

Yes. Once installed, Selfdrop has its own icon and opens in its own window, without the browser around it. It sits with your other apps: the app drawer on Android, the Home Screen on iPhone, the Dock on a Mac, the Start menu on Windows. You remove it like any other app.

Why isn't it in the App Store or Play Store?

Your browser installs it straight from selfdrop.app, so there's no file to download and nothing to update: you always have the latest version.

Do I have to install it?

No, Selfdrop works in any browser tab. Installing keeps it one tap away, and on iPhone it stops Safari from clearing the key that unlocks your drops.
